TYPES OF ACNE WE TREAT

There are many types of acne and we can treat them all. Whilst acne is a systemic condition, it manifests itself in different ways such as those below. Whichever type of acne you believe you’re suffering from, our treatments can help combat your symptoms.

Cystic Acne

Cystic acne is the most serious type of acne. It develops when cysts form deep underneath your skin. This can result from a combination of bacteria, oil, and dry skin cells that get trapped in your pores.

WHAT IS CYSTIC ACNE?

Cystic acne presents itself as hard lumps under the skin. They can be localised in a small area or they appear generally across the face, but also the back or chest. Cystic acne can develop from moderate acne if the condition worsens without effective intervention.

Stress can contribute to cystic acne but it is most commonly caused by severe, systemic acne, which means an underlying insensitivity to a hormonal imbalance, which creates the right environment on the skin for cystic acne to take hold.

BACK ACNE OR BACNE

“Bacne” is a common skin condition that can cause a lot of stress. Acne tends to appear on the back when you are suffering from severe, systemic acne.

WHAT CAUSES ACNE ON THE BACK?

If you have acne on your back (also known as “bacne”), as well as your face and maybe also your chest, this is likely to be because you have a type of acne called severe acne. Severe acne is a systemic condition, which means it has an underlying rather than a superficial cause. It involves inflamed nodules and cysts in more than one area, especially the shoulders.

Severe acne is driven by a sensitivity to hormones, in particular Dihydrotestosterone or DHT.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF BACK ACNE?

Back acne has the same symptoms as severe acne on the face:

  • Hard and painful nodules and cysts
  • Excess oil
  • Increased skin cell turnover
  • Increased bacteria
  • Inflammation

 ACNE VULGARIS

Typically Acne Vulgaris presents itself as mild to moderate, and appears on the lower part of the face, on the chin and around the mouth.

WHAT IS ACNE VULGARIS?

Acne Vulagris is the medical name for common acne and spans a range of classifications and symptoms:

  • Mild – blackheads and whiteheads
  • Moderate – blackheads, whiteheads, pustules and papules
  • Severe – Hard and painful nodules and cysts, often occurring on multiple areas of the body

Most people suffer from Acne Vulgaris in their teenage years when they go through puberty, due to fluctuations  and sensitivity to hormones. Often the contraceptive pill can also contribute to this type of acne.

MATURE OR ADULT ACNE

Adult or mature acne looks exactly the same as the acne that younger people suffer with. It can cause a self confidence issues and embarrasment.

WHAT IS ADULT ACNE?

Acne is often considered a predominantly teenage affliction, but it can also affect many people long into adulthood. People can suffer from adult acne into their twenties, thirties and even as late as their forties. In such cases the effect on self-esteem and self-confidence can be serious and can even cause depression, which is why sufferers often seek adult acne treatment.

Adult acne can occur as mild, moderate or severe acne depending on the type of blemishes your skin has:

  • Mild – blackheads and whiteheads
  • Moderate – blackheads, whiteheads, pustules and papules
  • Severe – Hard and painful nodules and cysts, often occurring on multiple areas of the body

The symptoms of acne in adults are also the same as when teenagers develop the condition:

  • Excess oil
  • Increased skin cell turnover
  • Increased bacteria
  • Inflammation
